G is for Gallinipper or Giant Mosquito

Have you ever seen a Gallinipper? You never want to see one in person.

Gallinippers are Giant, inch-long mosquitoes. Look at the comparison in the following picture of a normal Florida mosquito, and then take a gander at the gallinipper on the left.

Gallinippers, Psorophora ciliata, are a hostile species of mosquito.  They are so terrifying that children run in horror as the Gallinipper aggressively chases them around school grounds. They prefer human blood.

They are called Gallinippers because they can literally drink a gallon of blood, human blood, in a day.

You can swat them off before they begin to drill into you, because you know immediately when they have landed because of their giant size. Their bite is extremely painful and has been described as "being stabbed by a knife". Forget repellent,  Gallinippers will have landed and begun drilling before they would even have noticed you were wearing repellent. Drowning yourself in Deet won't stop these horrifying critters.

As I said, there bite is vicious.

Unlike normal mosquitoes, these Gallinippers lay eggs in dry ground and can lay dormant for years. When the rainy season comes, they will hatch and attack. There's no stopping them.

Of course, they are limited to the East Coast of southern Florida for now, but who's to say they won't migrate across the southern moist states like North Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas before long. It was said they were brought to this area by a hurricane sometime during the past couple of years.

If there is any good news about these Giant mosquitoes, they are telling us they do not carry diseases.

They are clumsy and slow because of their size, and can be swatted, but Mosquito Control is in for a long, painful season. What will it take to nip these things in the bud?

That's a really really nasty mosquito! Not something a dragon has to worry about but they must be more noisy than smaller mosquitoes too, I guess.

Where I live there are some giant sized mosquitos . I wonder if those were these kind. They did terrify me but were so slow that they were easy to escape.

Scary! I know how annoying the smaller mosquitoes are and I think these Gallinippers will be even more dreadful! Haha! I hope these Gallinippers don’t come near our vicinity since I know that mosquito control is being done actively in our community. Well, I think I’m still interested in seeing one of them, when they’re already dead, that is. :)
