R = Remember When

Do you remember when you first made the choice to write?

I remember it was a Saturday afternoon. The family were in the den watching TV--something I rarely choose for occupying my spare time. I thought about my last daughter graduating soon, and then I would be an empty nester.

My thoughts raced about things I've wanted to do or dreamed of doing when my children were grown. (not necessarily gone, but grown) Of course travel entered my thoughts, but then I remembered I had always wanted to write. I wondered if thirty somewhat years of journal keeping (now volumes) counted.

Like a light bulb flashing in my brain, I decided it was time to write a novel.

The thoughts began to flow, I immediately started to type, and three years later I published my first novel. Now, I'm working on the sequel. What fun!

A melancholy thought is how quickly 'Now' becomes 'Remember When.'

The moral to this thought is don't waste your time, but enjoy your journey before it becomes your past.

Do you remember when you sat down to write? (Short stories, poetry, novels, articles, blogs...)

How cool that you can remember the exact moment! I don't remember, but I've been told by a family friend that I'd made the decision before I was five years old. It's taken me a long time to make writing my priority, but I've had the itch all my (remembered) life.

I've always loved writing. Even before I knew how to do it, I used to draw pages of loops and squiggles on lined paper and pretend it was real words that made sense... So, no change there then. ;-)

Love your comments, Kern. I guess the itch has been there for me for a long time, but the actual deciding to do it, happened once upon a time.

Hi Ermie, I have a granddaughter that did that exact thing as soon as she could hold a pen. She spent hours drawing tiny little circles and squiggles. I always thought she'd be an artist, but maybe I was wrong. Maybe, just maybe, she will be a writer. Thanks for your comments

I don't remember exactly, but what got me writing was I was bored one day and decided to write down a story I had been musing on for fun. I do remember when I finally told hubby. It was around Christmas and we were visiting his parents. He caught me writing and asked what I was doing. I was so nervous about telling him.

Patricia I think that is awesome. Awesome that you write. What did hubby say?

So true about wasting your time. I remember seeing an ad for a writing class and I knew I had to try. My trouble is I'm afraid to let go of my work.

I don't know the exact moment, but I know the catalyst for my writing. I was 5th or 6th grade and a teacher told me one day he would see my writing in print. From that moment on I was destined to be a writer.

I remember being young and scribbling down a story. I wrote a dungeons and dragons style book when I was about 12 or 13 and started dreaming up ideas for a novel. It's taken me a long time to take it up seriously, but getting there. :)

I can't remember the moment I decided to write stories as it's something I've always done. I remember the exact moment I decided it was what I wanted to do 'as a grown up'. I was 9 and my class had been taken to the library for a talk by a children's author and that was it. I wanted to be an author too.
